Don’t suppress strong emotions, especially anger. You spend hours shopping and cooking dinner for your friend, who cancels at the last minute; tell her that you’re annoyed. Don’t say, “Oh, it was no trouble.” It was trouble. Resigning yourself to mistreatment makes you believe you deserve mistreatment—and that youa’ll always get it.from “SELF CREATION” by Dr. George Weinberg
- Complain to the person you think is harming you, and not to anyone else.
- Try not to object to your mate’s behavior in front of anyone else.
- Don’t compare the person’s behavior with that of other people.
- Make your complaint as soon as you can;
that is, as soon as you’re alone with the other person and can articulate it.
- Don’t repeat a point once you’ve made it
and the other person has carefully considered it.
- Object only to actions that the other person can change.
- Make your complaints vocally, not facially.
- Try to make only one complaint at a time.
- Don’t preface your complaint.
- Don’t aplogize to your complaint after making it.
- Avoid sarcasm.
- Don’t ask people why they’re doing something to which you object.
Ask them to stop, if that is the underlying idea you wish to express.- Rehearse your presentation if you need to.
